The credentialing process requires multiple confidential documents from numerous resources. The many resources subject to payer review include education and training, peer and instructor references, malpractice insurance board certification, previous hospital affiliations and malpractice history. Due to the complexity involved, the credentialing process can take up to six months and if proper procedures are not followed, credentialing can take up to a year. In addition to the amount of detail involved, you have to go through the credentialing process for each payer whose insurance you plan on accepting within your practice.
